Apply to Join the MCF Board

MCF has a fundraising board. Every director helps raise the money that turns good ideas into lasting improvements for Moraga.

Moraga Community Foundation is an all-volunteer nonprofit with no paid staff. The board identifies significant projects and raises the funds locally. With the support of generous neighbors, MCF has raised $450,000 for improvements at Moraga Commons and is now leading the effort to bring shade to the Lamorinda All Access Playground.

If you want to see that kind of work happen in Moraga and are ready to help support it, we invite you to apply.

What We Ask of Every Board Member

Fundraising is the heart of the role, so we want to be clear about it from the start. Each director agrees to:

  • Raise money. Ask friends, neighbors, colleagues, and local businesses to support MCF projects.
  • Give personally. Contribute to MCF based on your means. We expect 100% of the board to give, because it shows donors and partners that MCF’s leaders believe in the work first.
  • Open doors. Introduce MCF to people and organizations who could become donors, sponsors, or community partners.
  • Choose projects. Help decide which community projects MCF takes on and funds.

You do not need fundraising experience to join, but you do need to be willing to ask. MCF supports board members with template emails and other materials you can personalize for your own network.

The Time Commitment

  • Monthly board meetings. The board sets its meeting schedule each year.
  • Two-year terms. Directors may serve additional terms.
  • Between meetings. Mostly fundraising, and sometimes helping staff MCF’s booth at community festivals.
  • Volunteer service. Board members are not paid.

Who Should Apply

Board members must live in the Moraga area or have a principal place of business here. We welcome people of every background and stage of life who:

  • Care about Moraga and want to see lasting, visible improvements in town
  • Are comfortable asking others for support, or are ready to learn
  • Have connections across the community, such as schools, sports, neighborhoods, faith communities, service clubs, and local businesses
  • Bring skills that help a small nonprofit, such as finance, marketing and communications, events, law, or construction and project management

How to Apply

Board seats are limited, and every applicant is reviewed by the nominating committee.

  1. Apply by email. Tell us about yourself, why you would like to join, the parts of the community you could help MCF reach, and any fundraising or volunteer experience. Please confirm that you have read the expectations above.
  2. Nominating committee interview. The committee reviews each application and meets with candidates to discuss MCF’s work, upcoming projects, and what the role involves.
  3. Board interview. Candidates the committee recommends then meet with the full board.
  4. Board election. The full board votes to elect new directors.

Applying does not commit you to serve.
